Best Driving Theory Test Revision Resources (UK 2026)

An honest comparison of official DVSA materials, apps, question banks, hazard clips, free tools and final-review notes.

By Zero Effort · Reviewed 31 July 2026 · Independent study aid

Quick answer: Start with current official material for accuracy, add one question bank that explains mistakes, and practise hazard perception with moving video. Use concise notes only for retrieval and final review. No single book, app or cheat sheet does all four jobs well.

“Best” depends on the job. The table separates learning the rules, diagnosing gaps, practising hazard timing and reviewing shortly before the test.

How we assessed each option

  • Accuracy: Does it identify its publisher, link to official rules and show when it was checked?
  • Coverage: Does it cover the full multiple-choice syllabus, hazard perception, or one clearly stated part?
  • Useful feedback: Does it explain why an answer is safer and help you find a rule, or only reveal a score?
  • Practice format: Does it provide fresh questions, realistic timing and moving hazard clips where those are needed?
  • Commercial clarity: Are price, renewal, delivery, limitations and refund information visible before purchase?

Build a small revision stack

Free-first

Use the online Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs, add free topic checks, and find reputable video-based hazard practice.

Structured

Choose one official DVSA kit format, keep a written error log and return to the official rule behind every wrong or guessed answer.

Final 48 hours

Review your error log, concise notes and a few hazard clips. Do not install several new apps or attempt the full syllabus again.

Whichever route you choose, answer fresh questions after a gap. Repeating the same mock can measure memory for that mock rather than understanding of the rule.

How to judge an app or question bank

  • Look for a named publisher, a recent update and a clear statement of which UK test it covers.
  • Check that wrong answers include explanations and references, not only the correct letter or answer position.
  • Confirm whether hazard practice uses moving clips and gives timing feedback.
  • Read privacy, subscription and auto-renewal terms before installing or paying.
  • Avoid “secret questions”, copied screenshots and guaranteed-pass claims. Legitimate resources teach the syllabus; they do not promise the exact live test.

Common questions

Is the Highway Code enough?

It is the essential rules reference, but most learners also benefit from timed questions and video-based hazard-perception practice.

Are free resources enough?

They can be if they cover both test sections, expose your weak topics and include realistic hazard clips. Paying mainly buys convenience, structure or a particular format.

Should I use several theory-test apps?

Usually not. One current, well-explained question bank plus official references is easier to evaluate than several apps with inconsistent wording.

What should I use the night before?

Your own error log, a short final-review aid and two or three hazard clips. Stop early enough to sleep and prepare your identification and journey.
